Gregg Popovich Stepping Down From Being Spurs Head Coach

Gregg Popovich Stepping Down From Being Spurs Head Coach
Gregg Popovich, one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, is stepping down from being head coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Popovich will transition to the role of team president after 29 years of leading the franchise from the sidelines, the longest-tenured coach in major North American sports until Friday, according to NBA insider Shams Charania.
This follows Popovich’s absence from the team after suffering a stroke on Nov. 2, which caused him to miss the rest of the 2024-25 NBA season. Mitch Johnson took over as interim head coach while Popovich recovered. The organization announced Friday that Johnson will succeed Popovich as the franchise’s next head coach.

Popovich holds the NBA record for most regular season wins at 1,422 games – all with the Spurs. He led the team to five NBA Championships between 1999 and 2014. He was the longest-tenured coach for one franchise in NBA history.
Popovich first joined the Spurs organization in 1988 as an assistant coach under Larry Brown. He left after the 1991-92 season to join the Golden State Warriors as an assistant coach under Don Nelson. He returned to San Antonio in 1994 as the team’s general manager. He took over head coaching duties after a 3-15 start during the 1996-97 season, firing Bob Hill, and remained the head coach until 2025.
After landing Hall-of-Fame power forward Tim Duncan in the 1997 NBA Draft, the Spurs went on to become one of the greatest dynasties in pro sports. Leading teams with NBA stars like Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobli, Kawhi Leonard and more, Popovich and the Spurs won the 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014 NBA Championships.
