Colts Make Big Move At Safety For Cam Bynum

INDIANAPOLIS – Safety was always a need for the Colts in 2025 (my biggest one), and Chris Ballard addressed it on the first day of free agency.
In an un-Ballard like move, he gave new defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo a safety in Camryn Bynum, who comes over from the Vikings.
The deal reportedly is for $60 million across 4 years, with the thought Bynum will take the spot of outgoing free agent Julian Blackmon.
Honestly, describing the 26-year-old Bynum as a healthier Blackmon might not be the craziesr thought.
Bynum, a cornerback in college (like Blackmon), was durable at Cal, and has been that way in the NFL, not missing a single game in each of the last 3 seasons.
In the complicated scheme of Brian Flores with the Vikings, Bynum clearly earned some back-end trust.
Anarumo has said he likes a “problem solver” in that deep safety spot, so expect Bynum to try and earn that tag, with fellow safety Nick Cross heading into the final year of his rookie contract.
Ball production has been at a very nice level for Bynum and his known as a pretty sound tackler.
Improving the secondary was definitely a big off-season focus for the Colts, with Bynum the first piece in that.
Cornerback needs attention, too. And depth at safety isn’t something the Colts have much of.
Anarumo’s defensive background is in the secondary and his best defenses in Cincinnati had strong play back there.
Bynum was a 4th round pick out of Cal in 2021 and is certainly known for his post-turnover, viral, celebrations.
While the Colts lack true competition at safety, that didn’t seem to be an issue for Bynum in Minnesota.
To earn his full-time starting job, Bynum beat out former first-round pick Lewis Cline.
At the age of 26, Bynum has the chance to provide the Colts with some short-term, and long-term, security at safety, which isn’t something they’ve had in a while.
